Webinar 1: LYE Network: "Atomic Classroom Habits"

Date and Time: May 8, 2024 07:00 PM İST

Speaker: Tim Warre

Session Details:

There’s usually at least one or two in every class. Those students whose writing assignments you look forward to correcting, the ones who revise their notes, make use of every extra tool or link you share with them and obviously consume English content for pleasure in their free time. How can we help the rest of the class take a leaf out of these students’ books?

In James Clear’s 2018 book “Atomic Habits” the writer discusses the power of making small 1% improvements to our daily habits and how these incremental changes can have long-lasting compounding effects. This talk will look at ways we can apply this principle and theories of habit formation in general to a classroom setting. Attendees will leave this talk with practical ideas and tweaks they can make in their own classes, as well as a longer-term framework for putting their students on a path to more effective and rewarding language acquisition.

Webinar 3: BritishCouncil: “Becoming a teacher: beyond training”

Date and Time: Tuesday 14 May 2024 12.00 -13.15 (UK time)

Speaker: Alan Maley

Session details:

The webinar will explore:

* the importance of personal qualities in becoming a teacher

* life-long learning beyond the training room

* teacher agency and professional confidence.

In a recent discussion, a teacher made this comment, 'Now that I’ve finished my teacher training, I know how to teach. But I still don’t know how to be a teacher.' This webinar is in part a response to that comment, which goes to the heart of teacher education.

Alan Maley, involved in language education for over 60 years, discusses the results of an informal, unpublished inquiry where experienced teachers were asked to recall a teacher from their past who they had particularly admired, liked and respected. They were asked to list the factors which led them to this conclusion. Overwhelmingly, it was personal qualities which dominated – of the five main characteristics only one referred to professional expertise.

Alan suggests that acquisition or developing these human characteristics is not susceptible to formal training and suggests a number of possible ways teacher educators can help teachers to acquire indirectly some of what seem to be desirable qualities – activities teachers can do alone and activities they can do with the support of others.

Webinar 5: Bridging In-Class and Out-of-Class Language Learning with Technology

Abstract: Language learning involves the accumulation of experiences across settings. In-class and out-of-class learning contribute significantly but uniquely to language development. Learners' out-of-class experience is also related to in-class learning experience. Augmenting the connection and strengthening the transferability between the two is hence essential to support language learning. Technology can catalyze this integration. How teachers respond to the potential connection between the two deserves attention. This seminar introduces existing literature on this phenomenon and reports the findings from my research studies in the Chinese context.
