Webinar 3:  IATEFL: "PRONSIG- Inseparability of Reading and Pronunciation"

Date: Saturday, March 15, 2025 | Time: 3:00 PM IST

Speaker: Mike Budden

Session details:

Reading and speaking are widely considered separate skills, however, this contradicts findings that successful reading depends on having a reliable phonological repertoire. (Dehaene, 2009., Walter, 2008)

The perceived separation of the speaking sub-skill of pronunciation from reading means that students’ phonological awareness is not fostered alongside their reading skills. When students encounter new words while reading, they are forced to either guess the pronunciation and/or draw upon their L1 as a guide. With each repeat encounter, their  false internal pronunciation is reinforced, perhaps with L1 influence.

In this talk, we will explore these links and discuss how to better support our students to develop greater pronunciation awareness when reading.

Webinar 2: TESOL AEIS Webinar: Problem-Posing Perspectives in TESOL and Materials Development

Speakers: Graham V. Crookes

Speaker details:

Graham V. Crookes is Professor, Department of Second Language Studies, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, where he has been since 1988. His primary interests include transformative and problem-posing L2 pedagogies. His most recent book is English for a Critical Mind: Language Pedagogy for Social Justice (Delta/Klett).

Date: Monday, 3 March 2025 | Time: 2:00 p.m. ET

Session details:

Problem-posing is one way to describe the Freirean approach in Adult ESL, established several decades ago by Elsa Auerbach and Nina Wallerstein. In this perspective, teachers help adult ESL students develop the language they need to address real-world problems arising from their lives and experiences, with a larger social justice focus in view. A key aspect of this is materials; although a participatory approach implies joint construction of curriculum, teachers cannot be expected to move in this direction without at least some sample materials, or preferably a bank of pre-prepared materials that can be adapted to students’ varying needs and concerns.

A characteristic element of problem-posing pedagogy is the “code”, an element of materials, often visual, that acts as a stimulus or “projective device”. These should be easier to develop in an era of image-oriented AI. Codes can also be elements of text, fragments of dialog, and more. The webinar will introduce the basic concepts of problem-posing pedagogy, drawing on classic concepts, and also illustrate materials using the work of Auerbach & Wallerstein. It will then suggest design actions and possible tools or apps. Small group discussion and sharing using zoom breakout rooms will be scheduled with a final phase that should allow experiences and options to be broadly shared across all attendees.

Webinar 3: EAQUALS: “Why we should put compassion at the heart of language education”

Session details:

This webinar proposes that contemporary language education needs to have compassion at its core. Compassion can inform both HOW we teach as well as WHAT we teach. Together, we will reflect on how to build and model compassion in the relationships we foster in class. Next, we consider how to encourage students to generate ideas and take action in their local and global communities demonstrating compassion for others and the planet; all the while working through the medium of whichever language they are learning.

Learning to communicate and connect with the world around them is typically the main goal for language education. In this webinar, we discuss specific ways in which we can sustainably move towards achieving this aim by placing compassion at the heart of language education.

Some of the topics touched upon include:

  • -Teacher-learner relationships that embody trust, care and inclusivity
  • -Social-emotional learning and empathy among learners
  • -Teaching self-compassion and wellbeing literacy
  • -Compassion for others, including global citizenship education and social justice
  • -Eco literacy, sustainable living. and compassion for the natural world

Date: January 15, 2025 | Time: 05:00 PM - 06:00 PM

Speakers: Stella Saliari

Session Details:

Classrooms are not hermetically sealed spaces that are disconnected from the outside world. To the contrary, they are reflections of existing injustices, power relationships, diversities and differences in privilege which can influence our students’ learning process. Therefore, in this webinar we will explore classrooms as radical spaces of change; as environments that have the potential to scrutinize top-down processes of learning and locations which foster social justice. In doing so, we will also interrogate our very own role as educators acknowledging that we exist in relation with others, that we are embedded in environments that represent hegemonic concepts of societal and cultural ways of knowing and learning and that we do not enter the classroom as disembodied beings. Join us as we embark on this very personal and critical journey to explore the classroom as a transformative space towards social justice. There will also be time for Q&A.

Recording 2: Trinity College London English Language: “How has technology changed the way we listen?”

Speaker: Luke Harding

Session Details:

Listening is so automatic that a lot of the time we don't even notice we're doing it - until there is some kind of challenge, that is. Luke Harding explains what shapes the ability to perceive and process sounds, describes the ways in which listening can be tested, given that it is difficult to observe, and sheds light on the seemingly trivial question of why it matters if candidates hear a listening text once or twice.

We often take listening for granted—until something makes it challenging. In the fourth episode of our English Language podcast, Luke Harding, Professor of Applied Linguistics, explores what affects our ability to hear and process sounds.

In this episode, Mr. Hardlig explains how listening skills can be tested, even though they’re hard to observe, and tackles an interesting question: does it matter if test-takers hear a listening text once or twice?

Webinar 4: CERCLL Virtual Exchanges:“Leveraging the Power of a "Professional Conversation Partner" in the Language Classroom”

Speakers: Marta Tecedor

Date: Thursday, December 12, 2024 | Time:10-11:30am (UTC -7)

Session details:

In the last few years, and particularly since the onset of the COVID 19 health crisis, Virtual Exchanges (VE) have grown in popularity among world language educators for their capacity for facilitating real-time, authentic, multimodal communication between learners and speakers of the target language and for their potential to increase learners’ contact hours with the target language outside the classroom.

Pedagogical initiatives that use VEs to promote interpersonal communication have traditionally been carried out in the context of e-tandems—virtual exchanges in which two learners with different native languages help each other learn their respective languages—and telecollaboration projects—virtual communications in formal educational settings between two or more students learning their interlocutor’s first language. Currently, a third model has started gaining popularity in formal educational settings: service-provider virtual exchanges (SPVE): one-on-one or small-group VE sessions between L2 learner(s) and a native speaker who receives economical compensation for their conversational services.

In this presentation, Dr. Tecedor will focus on the defining characteristics of SPVEs and discuss how this more recent model can be incorporated in the world language curriculum.

Webinar 1: LSPPC Webinars: "Can OpenAI write as rhetorically as humans do? A discourse study of human- and ChatGPT-generated research article abstracts in Applied Linguistics"

Date: Friday, 18 October 2024

Time: 4:00pm - 5:00pm HKT (UTC/GMT + 8)

Speakers: Becky S. C. Kwan, Thomas H. T. Chan, Belinda W. S. Ko, Chris Y. H. Kwan

Session Details:

Since its release by OpenAI in 2022, ChatGPT has shaken up the entire world. With claims that it can replace humans in performing various writing tasks, a new line of research has emerged to examine the extent to which ChatGPT can generate human-like research articles. Results of the studies have so far been mixed, with some pointing to high degrees of similarity while some showing notable differences. The inconclusive findings are attributable to the various evaluation methods employed, some of which involve human-judgement that relies on expert intuition while some adopt detection methods that untrained automatic or machine-learned algorithms with parameters focusing on different linguistic features. The various methods have their own strengths and pitfalls, but one common issue that stands out is that their evaluation parameters rarely reflect scholarship in the field of English for Research and Publication Purposes (ERPP) that forms the bedrock of current research writing instruction. Hoping to address this theoretical lacuna in the existing studies and exploring what the field of ERPP can offer, we employed a discourse analytic approach to evaluate ChatGPT-generated article abstracts by tapping into theory of rhetoric in research communication and existing empirical findings about the rhetorical move structures of human-generated abstracts. Our data comprise abstracts of articles published in applied linguistics journals and those generated by ChatGPT. The results reveal noticeable differences between the two corpora. In this webinar, we will elaborate some of the observations and draw implications for future evaluation studies. We will also share thoughts for critical instruction in ERPP in contexts where students are allowed to use ChatGPT.

Date and time: Wednesday, October 23, 2024, 08:00 PM in İstanbul

Speaker: Robert O’Dowd

Session details:

Forms of online collaborative learning, such as Virtual Exchange and Blended Mobility, are becoming increasingly popular in foreign language education. Virtual Exchange (VE) refers to the numerous online learning initiatives and methodologies which engage learners in online collaborative learning and interaction with partners from different cultural backgrounds as part of their study programmes. Blended Mobility combines stages of online collaboration with short periods of physical mobility. Although VE has been employed in foreign language education for over 25 years, it has received much greater attention since the recent COVID-19 pandemic and many practitioners are exploring its potential to develop foreign languages learning, intercultural competence and global citizenship in their classrooms (Porto, 2018; Ramirez, 2019; Trapé, 2018). In this presentation I will use key publications from the literature to explore how VE and Blended Mobility can promote foreign language learning as well as global citizenship. I will also outline how VE and Blended Mobility can be integrated effectively into foreign language programmes. Finally, I will reflect on the challenges educators face as we try to use this activity to deal with issues of diversity and inclusion and to establish equitable relationships with partners from other countries.

Webinar 2: TESOL: " Literacies Theory and Practice as Expanded Possibilities for our Language Classrooms"

Date & Time: Friday, 11 October 2024, 12:00 p.m. ET

Speaker: Dr. Raúl Alberto Mora

Session Details:

Over the last decade, I’ve advocated for the importance of making theory accessible to teachers (meaning, letting them read it in the first place) as a source for inspiration as they look for creative and engaging ways to work with students. Alternative literacy paradigms (e.g., critical literacy, multimodality, multiliteracies, etc.) envision these possibilities for conceptual and practical play, making our classrooms true sites for languaging and learning.

This webinar will share the work that my team of teacher-researchers and I have done in Colombia using alternative literacies as our way of “reinventing education”. The webinar will first go into some of the conceptual underpinnings behind the idea of “literacies in second languages” to then look at specific case studies/success stories from our teacher-researchers and my own work as a teacher educator. The goal for this webinar session is to invite teachers to plot their own course about how to use alternative literacies to devise more engaging language learning scenarios for their students and themselves.

Presenter

Dr. Raúl Alberto Mora is an associate professor in the Doctorate in Education at Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana in Medellín, Colombia (teaching remotely from Trondheim, Norway), where he also chairs the award-winning Literacies in Second Languages Project research lab. Dr. Mora has also served as a visiting professor and scholar at universities in Colombia, Poland, Mexico, and Czechia and has given guest lectures and keynotes (in person and virtually) at universities and events in Colombia, Brazil, Spain, Vietnam, India, Indonesia, Türkiye, Canada, and the United States. He currently serves at the Literacy Research Association Board of Directors and co-founded the Transnational Critical Literacies Network (TCLN). He coedited The Handbook of Critical Literacies (2021) and Translanguaging and Multimodality as Flow, Agency, And A New Sense of Advocacy in And from The Global South (2024). His research focuses on the nexus between literacies and city spaces, the second-language literacy practices in gaming spaces, the use of alternative literacy paradigms in language education, and the need for socio-critical frameworks to rethink bi/multi/plurilingualism and the way we describe English as a language worldwide, topics that he has discussed in publications, conference presentations, and his teaching.
