FLIPGRID

Description of the tool

  • Flipgrid is a website and an application for teachers to assign video discussions to students by creating groups or classes.

How to access the website

  • You can either go to the website https://info.flipgrid.com/ or download the app to create a class and start assigning video discussion tasks to your students.

How it works

  • After creating an account on Flipgrid, you need to create a group by clicking on the relevant icon as shown below:

  • After creating the group, you can add members by sending a link to your students.

  • Below image shows how you will view the group. By clicking on the “topic,” you can create a topic for your students to talk about.

  • Once you click on the “topic,” you can add a title, a description and arrange the maximum recording time. Please go ahead and explore the “settings” for further tailoring of your speaking task.

How it can be used in the classroom

  • The platform is mainly used for speaking assignments in the form of videos and can be considered as a social media platform for the group members. Each member makes their videos available to the entire group and it’s possible to add comments and feedback. It is a great way of assigning asynchronous tasks and extending learning outside the classroom. It provides opportunities for genuine communication among members.

  • Below images summarize many ideas about how to exploit Flipgrid in general. For EFL classrooms, the speaking tasks can be converted into Flipgrid topics to ensure the highest participation and engagement by the students. Or teachers can upload their own videos to aid students’ academic or social emotional learning.
